Assessment and Evaluation:

Project Assessment and Evaluation - The Communication Skills project is being evaluated by a team led by Mansfield University Professors John Mansfield, and Nancy Sidell.  All Head Start programs in this study use “The Creative Curriculum,” published by Teaching Strategies, Inc. as the basis of their classroom philosophy and activities.  An assessment tool from the same source, “The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum,” assesses children three times during each school year.   The social/emotional data set and several language data sets from the assessments will be used to indicate a child’s ability to express feelings, emotions, problem solving skills, ideas, etc.

Assessment of student communication skills from Year One and Year Two (2004-5 and 2005-6) will be compared to baseline assessments of 2003-4, prior to the project’s initiation.  A comparison of Year One to the baseline data has been completed and an article for professional education journals is being prepared.  In addition to data from the Developmental Continuum assessment, the evaluation team will examine video and audio recording of music/rhythmical activities, pretend play, storytelling, and a sampling of student visual artwork.  A comparison of results from the previous year (2003-4), and the October and April results of the project years (2004-5 & 2005-6) will be made.
